d'influences heavy metal. Comme avec les deux groupes pr&eacute;c&eacute;demment cit&eacute;s, les parties rapides alternent avec des breaks accoustiques et comme avec les deux groupes pr&eacute;c&eacute;demment cit&eacute;s les voix typiquement black metal alternent avec du chant clair et m&eacute;lodique. Si les nombreuses parties accoustiques sont parfaitement r&eacute;ussies (en t&eacute;moigne le magnifique instrumental &quot;the lonely wandering&quot;), il n'en est pas de m&ecirc;me pour la voix claire qui semble encore un peu limit&eacute;e. Le chanteur, pas toujours tr&egrave;s opportuniste dans ses choix de m&eacute;lodies, ne ma&icirc;trise pas encore totalement son sujet et flirte parfois dangereusement avec les limites de la justesse (n'est pas Garm qui veut). La bo&icirc;te &agrave; rythme plutot bien programm&eacute;e ne g&ecirc;ne pas l'&eacute;coute et se fait assez rapidement oublier, permettant ainsi de se concentrer sur les riffs &eacute;voquant encore et toujours la paire Ulver/Borknagar, interessants donc mais manquant cruellement d'originalit&eacute;. Cette remarque pourrait d'ailleurs s'appliquer &agrave; l'ensemble des compositions et r&eacute;sumer ainsi l'impression globale qui pr&eacute;domine &agrave; l'&eacute;coute de ces 7 morceaux. Straasha, doit en effet trouver sa propre voie en d&eacute;veloppant (pourquoi pas) de fa&ccedil;on plus cons&eacute;quente, les parties purement atmosph&eacute;rique que le groupe maitrise &agrave; merveille et en &eacute;vitant surtout de se laisser trop envahir par Ulver &amp; Co. N&eacute;anmoins, rappellons qu'il ne s'agit l&agrave; que d'un premier enregistrement (si mes infos sont exactes) et gageons que le groupe saura s'affirmer dans un avenir esp&eacute;rons le tr&egrave;s proche. And it s the first release of Melancholia Rec., hailing from France as well.<br> STRAASHA is a fucking one-man project, founded by Lord Barth in 2000. The present, first opus is a concept work about Vaarg searching the soul of Vy rr, his father who drowned in the sea. Announced as Black Metal in the norwegian tradition, enriched with Heavy Metal and Folk music parts, I got nothing to add. It s even that, not less but not more as well. And it s a awful long way to the target level for Lord Barth. Especially the clean vocals will be a wicked obstacle I guess. There s nothing coming together and sometimes it s really bugging. The seven tracks contain three instrumental parts with acoustic guitars and synthetic sea ambient backgrounds. The remaining songs base on Black Metal of the second generation. Mostly raging with screaming guitars. Well played, just the silly synthetic drums nerve sometimes. To be fair: the screaming, hatefilled Black Metal vocals are cool. But the mixture is not the best and doesn t fucking work. By focusing for the good Black Metal parts STRAASHA could become interesting.<br> And now for something completely different - NUMENOR. Black Metal from a french solitary fighter too. Mazed by the sindarin name  Numenor and name-dropping like  Yggdrasil I was curious about what s gonna torture my oppressed ears now. And - it s Black Pagan Metal of the better sort. Black Metal in the vein of the mid 90 s filled with hymnal, epic parts. The guitars are in the foreground, but rightful  cause fucking professionally played. The tempo is between medium (mostly) and faster. The synth sounds are more fitting here, not that intrusive. The drums are artificially too, I guess, and not really convincing. For a few epic, choral parts NUMENOR remind me on Manowar and some cleaner, more silent moments are very Rock-like. Best they re if they simply strike fucking fast Black Metal. But those moments are few and far between. The first band consists in Straasha's raw black metal with a lot of folk and Heavy Metal influences. The Norwegian one-man-band also inserted heavy metal influences into their work, which is divided in five chapters. Straasha did a great alternation between acoustic guitars and violins with raw black metal passages. Great band. The other band in this split is Numenor, a side project of N.Sandoval. Numenor's music is "an authentic praise to Nature". In fact, they play good black metal alternating clean / guttural / screamed vocals. On retrouve d'ailleurs dans la musique une incorporation d'&eacute;l&eacute;ments Black, Heavy et voire m&ecirc;me Hardcore. &Agrave; premi&egrave;re &eacute;coute, j'ai toutefois &eacute;t&eacute; d&eacute;&ccedil;u. Apr&egrave;s un bruit de vagues qui s'abattent sur des rochers et dans nos &eacute;couteurs, on a droit &agrave; une chanson (&quot;A Revelation Beyond Dream&quot;) au sein de laquelle le guitariste et le chanteur nous livrent une interpr&eacute;tation compl&egrave;tement pourrie. Un gros riff tr&egrave;s ordinaire embarque par-dessus un blastbeat assez faible, ce qui s'endure, en fait, jusqu'&agrave; ce que le chanteur embarque... mon dieu!<br> <br> Le riff s'envole soudainement d'un c&ocirc;t&eacute; &agrave; un autre, sans suivre la musique. Le chanteur adopte une voix claire, ma foi, compl&egrave;tement affreuse. On dirait un jeune de 14-15 ans qui chante. Puis surviennent, &ocirc; soulagement, des cris dignes du chanteur de Marduk.<br> <br> Soudain, sans avertissement, tout s'&eacute;teint et la chanson change compl&egrave;tement de rythme pour nous envoyer dans un univers folklorique fort respectable, voir m&ecirc;me excellent! Des cris de foule, des chevaux qui marchent sur le sol rocailleux et des airs de guitare folklorique et classique r&eacute;sonnent.<br> <br> Apr&egrave;s cette br&egrave;ve interruption, la chanson repart et se termine sur un autre air. Puis vient le tour de la deuxi&egrave;me des 7 pi&egrave;ces de Straasha (&quot;Interval&quot;), une pi&egrave;ce enti&egrave;rement instrumentale d'une grande beaut&eacute;.De la guitare acoustique accompagn&eacute;e de contrebasse, un instrument que je consid&egrave;re trop rarement utilis&eacute; dans la musique d'aujourd'hui. Encore une fois, tout s'arr&ecirc;te apr&egrave;s deux minutes pour nous faire revivre l'incroyable exp&eacute;rience folklorique pos&eacute; presque au hasard au travers des diverses pi&egrave;ces.<br> <br> &quot;Farewell To The World&quot;, une chanson &agrave; caract&egrave;re plut&ocirc;t non-original, arrive &agrave; la hauteur des autres, mais sans les d&eacute;passer. Puis la cinqui&egrave;me pi&egrave;ce, &quot;The Lonely Wandering&quot; - instrumentale - joue dans le m&ecirc;me registre que &quot;Interval&quot;, mais sans avoir les m&ecirc;mes attraits. Mais on peut encore y remarquer la pr&eacute;sence de la contrebasse... le point le plus fort que j'ai remarqu&eacute; chez Straasha. Mais ne vous perdez pas trop loin dans l'ambiance, car celle-ci sera tr&egrave;s vite bris&eacute;e lorsque la sixi&egrave;me pi&egrave;ce commen&ccedil;era.<br> <br> &Agrave; quoi cela sert-il de cr&eacute;er une ambiance pour ensuite la d&eacute;molir brutalement &agrave; coup de guitare? &quot;The End&quot; constitue la derni&egrave;re pi&egrave;ce de Straasha et non la moindre, puisqu'il s'agit d'une autre chanson instrumentale. L'album se termine donc sur une bonne note, peut-&ecirc;tre pour compenser le d&eacute;but...<br> <br> Je dirais donc que Straasha est un groupe qui aime se compliquer les choses. J'ai un peu de difficult&eacute; &agrave; suivre l'&eacute;volution de l'album, surtout au niveau du r&eacute;cit (car c'est une histoire qui nous est racont&eacute;e ici). La batterie est par contre un atout d'une grande valeur, qui ajoute de la technique &agrave; cet album. Le batteur est, disons-le haut et fort, tr&egrave;s performant. La basse n'est pas tr&egrave;s audible, puisqu'elle ne sert que d'instrument d'arri&egrave;re-plan pour la guitare.<br> <br> Straasha est un groupe qui passe d'un extr&ecirc;me &agrave; l'autre. R&eacute;cemment sign&eacute; par Melancholia Records chez qui ils viennent de sortir ce premier EP (sous forme de Split avec Numenor), Straasha nous propose tout au long de ces 7 titres (dont trois instrumentaux) une musique riche, extr&ecirc;mement personnelle, m&eacute;langeant des influences black metal du d&eacute;but des 90's avec d'autres plus folk voir m&ecirc;me heavy. Lord Bath, unique membre du groupe, n'a pas choisi la facilit&eacute; puisque les V chapitres de ce disque forment un concept autour de la mer, comptant l'&eacute;pop&eacute;e de Varg, un marin, parti &agrave; la recherche de l'&acirc;me de son p&egrave;re disparu en mer. Et le pari est enti&egrave;rement r&eacute;ussi. Les 7 titres forment un tout indisociable, m&eacute;lange de passages typiquement black metal, men&eacute;s par des guitares assez rapides et m&eacute;lodiques et une voix black r&eacute;ellement excellente (aigue sans &ecirc;tre trop criarde) et de passages instrumentaux du plus bel effet: guitares acoustiques, violons, ambiance mer avec bruits des vagues, vents... L'alternance de deux types de compos est d'ailleurs tr&egrave;s bien fait et &agrave; aucun moment on ne ressent une quelconque lassitude ou impression de d&eacute;j&agrave; entendu. Leur Black Metal est original et sort des sentiers battus : le chant est &agrave; 50% Black et 50% clair, on retrouve de nombreux passages avec des parties de guitare acoustique et des violons (ce qui apporte un sentiment de m&eacute;lancolie et de nostalgie durant les 7 titres).<br> Lors des acc&eacute;l&eacute;rations de tempo, le chant se fait criard et la musique se fait &eacute;pique et brutale. Wie der Titel vermuten lässt, handelt es sich um dezent folkloristisch angehauchten Viking Metal, den uns Bandleader Lord Barth und sein Kompagnon Emperor Xaelis hier kredenzen. Die Umsetzung des lyrischen Konzepts kann als durchaus gelungen bezeichnet werden, der Sound lässt dagegen sehr zu wünschen übrig, denn eine Vielzahl der kompositorischen Ideen geht leider im undifferenzierten Klangbrei unter. Anschließend folgen NUMENOR, ein Projekt eines Musikers namens N. Sandoval, der auch schon bei den Arrangements für STRAASHA seine Finger im Spiel hatte. Die vier Songs überzeugen zwar durch musikalische Abwechslung, klingen aber doch zu verworren, um einigermaßen nachvollziehbar zu sein. Wohlgemerkt, dass die Band aus nur einem Mann besteht...<br> <br> Wer nun glaubt, das Album beinhaltet extremen Black Metal von der ersten bis zur letzten Minute, der irrt. Fakt ist, dass die Band bekannte Elemente des Genres mit wundervollen mittelalterlichen Klängen zu einem einzigartigen Klangteppich verwebt. "Drawing Near the Quest" ist so ein Beispiel. Da donnern die Gitarren im hohem Tempo dem Hörer entgegen, zwar nicht außergewöhnlich melodisch, doch dafür kräftig und hart. An einigen Stellen setzt das mittelalterliche Flair gekonnt ein, so dass man sich wundern muss, wie der Mann so zwei vollkommen verschieden Genres faszinierend verbindet. Die Songs werden nicht wie gewohnt mit Pausen überbrückt, sondern akustisch eingeleitet. Da weht ein Windstoss, da heulen die Wölfe, da sitzt man am Meer und hört den Wellen zu, einfach Klasse!<br> <br> "Farewell to the World" kommt zum Verhältnis anderer Songs ausgesprochen straight und etwas melodisch daher. Zwar empfinden sicher einige die Backgroundgesänge etwas störend, aber das ist nur sekundär. Straasha versteht es auch sehr gut, mit melancholischen Balladen umzugehen. Wer das Instrumental "The lonley Wandering" gehört hat, wird mit einer dicken Gänsehaut dafür belohnt. Zwar erklingen hier nur akustische Gitarren, die aber mit wundervollem Cello und Streicher arrangiert wurden. Dafür legt sich Lord Barth bei "The Great Battle of Elements" wieder ins Zeug und heizt dem Moshpit kräftig an. Das atmosphärische "The End" beendet die 5 Chapter's, die das Album unterteilt ist.<br> <br> Als Bonus gibt es noch 4 Songs der Extraklasse mit nordischem Einfluss, die zwar nicht außergewöhnlich schnell sind, aber durchaus melodische Akzente setzen. Vor allem das "Engulfed in Eternal Majesty" weiß durchaus zu überzeugen.<br> <br> Straasha hat wirklich eine außergewöhnliche Platte herausgegeben. "Numenor" bietet zwar nicht DEN ultimativen Black Metal, dafür eine gekonnte Abwechslung, frei nach dem Motto "öfter mal was neues". Norse fast black metal recreating an epic storm, which is alternated with acoustic instrumentals, heavy metal structures and sound recordings from the oceans. The music is in general filled with a kind of dark and noble emotion, often broken by the furious black metal, drawing the battles of elements (with special success in the last track "Great Battle of Elements"...). There are two voices: a black metal one and a clean one, which is like a remote call lost in the vast sea. Harsh vocals, blast-beats and heavy guitar riffs demonstrate the Black Metal background, while the clean vocals (which resemble those of early Vintersorg), acoustic guitars and nature sounds bring about a folkloric ambiance. I would say this is definitely an album to listen to alone, as the music is very personal and will surely reach each listener on many different levels. Straasha è una one-man-band in tipico stile norvegese, e propone un Black Metal epico fortemente debitore delle band dedite a quelle sonorità, quali gli inossidabili Bathory, gli Enslaved più Folk, i Vintersorg passati ed i Taake, soprattutto nei pezzi tirati. Il risultato, penalizzato da una registrazione non certo eccelsa, è un mix di partiture violente e di accenni alla musica folklorica nordica, che si realizza in passaggi per lo più sviluppati su mid-tempo piuttosto pesanti ed arricchiti da una voce limpida che narra le vicende di Vaarg, un marinaio che ha preso il mare per cercare l anima di suo padre. E quando Lord Barth decide di accelerare il suono il vero spirito delle foreste e dei mari gelati del grande Nord si ravviva, creando le atmosfere magniloquenti e tragiche che solo quelle terre possono generare. Gli otto pezzi che compongono la saga non brillano certo per originalità, ma la proposta è piuttosto valida, l aria che si respira è quella più classica, la proposta insomma trasuda una certa onestà. La musica degli Straasha è dedicata a pochi appassionati, ma quei pochi non rimarranno delusi. Non molto diversa la proposta dell altra band, i Numenor, autori anch essi di un Black Metal estremamente freddo, lento ed evocativo, sulla scia della tradizione epica degli act sopra citati. Ma mentre l accento degli Straasha è posto sulle partiture evocative, i Numenor mettono molta più energia nelle loro composizioni, spesso costruite su tempi decisamente più veloci, ed in grado di accostare, grazie anche al sapiente uso delle tastiere, il loro suono a quello di act più collaudati e dediti a sonorità quasi sinfoniche, il tutto però sempre nel ristretto cerchio del Black Metal elitistico. Anche per i Numenor vale il discorso fatto per gli Straasha per quanto riguarda una certa mancanza di personalità delle composizioni, ma come per quelli vale l osservazione che la mancanza di originalità è ampiamente nascosta da un attitudine verace e dallo sviluppo di atmosfere glaciali che ben si adattano al genere della proposta. La Francia ultimamente si sta muovendo piuttosto bene in campo estremo, e specialmente in quello Black Metal. Self-confidence or arrogance? Anyway, it made me very curious.<br> <br> In the year 2000 Lord Barth (also member of Ad Mortem In Aeternum) decided to start a one-man project under the name of Straasha. His aim was to create innovative music by adding pieces of heavy and folk metal to his Norwegian style black metal.<br> Inspired by quests far out at sea, the fictional opus about the sailor Vaarg was born.Vaarg has to save the soul of his father Vyrr, who disappeared at sea years ago. He asks Straasha, lord of the seas for help. This French progressive black metal, combined with viking elements, makes me think of Enslaved. The compositions are interesting and sometimes a little predictable.<br> You can hear that the songs really belong together and tell you a story; a beautiful story. Your mind will drift far away to desolate oceans. Viking hymns and acoustic passages are being varied by faster and grim black parts. This concept has got a dark and mythical atmosphere.<br> Lord Barth is currently recruiting a live-band. I am very excited about the opus of Vaarg and hope to see Straasha in concert soon!<br> <br> Numenor is first of all the isle at the most desolate corner of J.R.R. Tolkien's mortal world, but it is also a project of N. Sandoval. The project started in the year 2000 and after one year this French all-rounder decided to devote himself entirely to this band.<br> Enchanted by the grimness of nature, this man wrote four heartless songs that will make your fingers freeze, your body benumb and make you dream of forsaken and deserted places. Don't think nature is beautiful, nature is cruel. Numenor combines viking ballads and harsh black metal, but manages to maintain a completely own sound.<br> N. Sandoval is creating a major opus, which is expected to be finished by the end of this year.<br> <br> Both bands are very creative and are able to produce a fine piece of admirable dark art. Both bands presented here are quite similar in style, Straasha sings about the ocean, and Numenor sings about the cold majestic forest. Rather unusual for a split CD is the fact that Straasha gets 7 tracks, consisting of 4 "songs" and 3 instrumentals. It is the instrumentals that raise the eyebrows quite a bit, as the only thing you hear, besides the ocean sounds, are beautiful and majestic acoustic guitars and a cello, which adds a somewhat heavy yet melancholic feel to the tracks. Songs like 'A Revelation Beyond Dream' and 'Farewell To The World,' though, present nice high ended guitar work and the typical black metal riffing that is often times very catchy. Unusual still is the abundance of clean vocal work, which on the first track here sometimes sounds a bit off. The clean vocalist for Straasha is also doing clean vocals in Numenor, which was slightly more favorable for me, though not by much, as both bands are quite excellent. No cello in Numenor's work, and there are only 4 songs, but ALL contain vocals. The blackened vocals in Numenor's camp are a bit more harsh than with Straasha, which I enjoyed a great deal. 'A Journey Of Honor' contains slower paced black metal, but as with every song on this CD, they vary the speed and structure enough to make things interesting. This is a good thing, as the tracks 'Engulfed In Eternal Majesty' and 'Allegiance To The Dark Spirit Of Elements' tend to run over the 7 minute mark. Clean vocals are performed extremely well, and the majestic riffs catch you big time on 'Engulfed...'
